odds and ends
I haven't picked up a camera in quite a while. Not quite sure what that's about. May have needed some time off to let my batteries recharge, I don't know.
Meanwhile, The Felice Brothers are having a really entertaining photo-related contest in celebration of their new record. These are the bases I used for my entries:
Birdbath Eye View, Harlem, New York, NY
Let The Light Shine In, The Cloisters, Inwood, New York, NY
Atlantic Coast, near Bathsheba, Barbados
Seabirds in Flight, Atlantic City, NJ
Sand Heart, Atlantic City, NJ
Spin, Atlantic City, NJ
I'll post the entries once they surface as part of the contest. Also I think i may have a had a little bit too much fun with the exercise. But it was interesting, fiddling with fonts and thinking about what was implied, in terms of mood and vibe.
My semester is winding down now. Only five more weeks to go. I'm looking forward to summer, and being able to get out and wander and turn my head off with the camera.

Hunt's Garden, Barbados
Once a cave, later an orchard, now a garden, this verdant green place was my favorite of the three gardens we visited. It was the most relaxed, and definitely the place I would most like to just sit and chill with a glass of rum punch and a good book.

time for some tropical zen: Speightstown, Barbados
It snowed here again on Monday. This is now such a non-event that the intertubes didn't even flicker. I, however, am SO TIRED of snow. And cold. And ice. I need some tropical zen. So I'm sharing mine with you:
view from the side of the road, Speightstown, Barbados
Speightstown is the furthest from the airport, which translates to "least visited by tourists" which, for good or for ill, means that it less attention than, say, Bridgetown. On the other hand, there are buildings like this to be had:
I'm not quite sure what it is, but I think it was some sort of bodega/corner store type of outfit. It's across from the Parish Church:
some day i would like to go back and do specific photo projects, like, all of the parish churches, or, all of the roundabouts, since many of the traffic circles have distinctive decorations. Meanwhile, another one of Speightstown's older buildings:

fleurs - Andromeda Garden
This was our third garden in one day, so by the time we got there, we were a little bit fried. (Looking at the pictures now I can tell I was tired, and flagging.) It's a very carefully constructed place - formal, despite the riots of color and vegetation.
Also notable: the details on some of the paving stones:

so many places i have lived so many people i have been
Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow, January 2011
I've been listening to a Scottish band (Biffy Clyro) pretty much all day, so today you get some snippets of Glasgow.
Bridge over the Clyde, January 2011
Not long after I moved away from Glasgow, despite having spent very little time by the Clyde, I wrote a poem from which the line "the rush of the Kelvin, the amble of the Clyde" is the only one I can currently remember. But the city remains one of my favorite places, "home" the way places are when you still have favorite tea shops and remember the mall fondly, despite having not been inside for the better part of fifteen years.
I was young there, I suppose, and loved passionately, and that will leave a mark.
The Necropolis, January 2011
I navigate the city in a glaze of memory. My mind has forgotten where I am going, but my feet still know the way.

it came from the deep
Atlantic coast of Barbados, December 2010
Oh, little photo blog, I have neglected you. I am going to try and not do that anymore.
The picture above is one of my recent favorites, mainly because it looks so dark and stormy and atmospheric. This is the same place in color:
The angle is slightly different; I think I had to get out of the way of the incoming tide. also, for all of the dark and lowering skies, it was a fabulous day.
